Private generation registrations surged to new record in 2025
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) registered a record private power generation capacity in 2025, roughly the equivalent ot that of one and a half Kusile or Medupi power stations.
Former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter warned that Eskom’s continuous tariff hikes would drive its most valuable customers into the arms of self-generation shortly after his departure from the power utility.
